The Obuntu Model Farm

Cultivating Self-Reliance, Food Security, and Economic Freedom

The Obuntu Model Community Farm is more than an agricultural site—it is a laboratory for economic freedom and a testament to the powerful principle of ObuntuBulamu. We fundamentally reject external dependence by empowering rural women and girls to become skilled agri-preneurs. We transform traditional farming into profitable, resilient, and community-owned enterprises.

This farm is the living embodiment of Self-reliance (Okweyimiriizawo): providing the hands-on training that secures enhanced household income, strengthens food security, and ensures dignified nutrition for families

Our Approach: Hands-On Training, Enduring Networks

We ground all learning in practical application and ethical partnership. Our trainees receive intensive, on-farm training complemented by critical business support, ensuring they can immediately translate knowledge into sustainable income and growth.

  • Co-Creation and Ownership: Trainees immediately form practice groups, creating a resilient network of shared knowledge and mutual support. This ensures the sustainability and growth of their enterprises long after the initial training phase.

  • Essential Business Support: We reinforce their efforts with key services often inaccessible in rural areas, including vital market intelligence, reliable veterinary services, and overall agribusiness support to professionalize their livelihoods.

Key Areas Of Transformation

Horticulture

Sowing Seeds of Health and Wealth.

Horticulture provides rapid returns and is critical for improving family health and diversifying revenue streams. We train women and girls in modern, sustainable techniques for growing high-value vegetables and fruits for both local consumption and commercial sale.

  • Focus: Mastering year-round production cycles, ethical pest management protocols, water-efficient farming, and advanced post-harvest handling to minimize waste and maximize market quality and price.

  • The Human Impact: Trainees gain the power to secure consistent access to nourishing, high-quality food, directly translating into improved family nutrition and cognitive development. The quick sale cycle generates steady household income, shifting families from subsistence to self-directed commercial viability.

Turkey Rearing

Building Resilient Poultry Enterprise

Turkey rearing is a specialized, high-demand niche that offers significant potential for increased earnings and specialized resilience compared to traditional poultry.

  • Focus: Training includes specialized knowledge in breed selection, rigorous disease prevention protocols, cost-effective feed formulation, and efficient management of turkey flocks for commercial sale. Emphasis is placed on creating hygienic, low-stress environments to maximize bird health and yield.

  • The Human Impact: This intensive training equips women with the skills to run profitable, specialized livestock businesses that require lower capital and yield high returns. The income provides economic freedom that allows families to confidently invest in long-term goals like education and secure assets.
Africa, and Uganda in particular, is facing a quadruple crisis: climate emergency, energy poverty, food insecurity, and youth unemployment. At the Obuntu Farm, we don't just see problems; we see a value chain of solutions. We engage our communities to feed into this chain, building a culture where knowledge is not just shared—it is planted, harvested, and monetized for resilience.
