Step Up Youth Initiative champions the Obuntu Knowledge Model – a community-driven approach to development. This model is at the heart of the Komuka Skills Hub, a program empowering young people in Kampala’s urban communities.
The Komuka Skills Hub exemplifies the Obuntu model in action. We partner with local communities to identify challenges and develop solutions tailored to their needs. In Kampala, the need for safe spaces, marketable skills training, and economic opportunities for disadvantaged youth was clear.
A Community-Driven Solution
The Hub provides a safe space and training center for urban youth, including refugees, orphans, and those from challenging environments. Through the Obuntu model, we work hand-in-hand with local businesses to develop the leatherworking curriculum and create market linkages for graduates.
Empowerment, One Stitch at a Time
Since its inception, Komuka Skills Hub has empowered 89 young people. Five former trainees have even launched their own workshops, with ongoing support from Step Up Youth Initiative. This exemplifies the power of the Obuntu model – fostering self-sufficiency and creating a ripple effect of positive change within the community.
More than just Skills
Komuka Skills Hub goes beyond technical training. It’s a life support system, providing a pathway to meet basic needs like food and medical care. This fosters self-sufficiency and steers young people away from negative influences
