In 2013, Step Up Youth Initiative, then a loose network of young people in Uganda, joined forces with nine other youth groups from across Africa to form the African Youth Decade Alliance (AYDA). Under the guidance of African Monitor, we launched the Five/5 Campaign at a team meeting held at the African Union Commission premises in Addis-Ababa, Ethiopia. This continent-wide initiative marked the halfway point of the African Youth Decade (2009-2019) and aimed to mobilize young Africans to demand action from their leaders on youth development, as enshrined in the Maputo Declaration

Looking ahead, we remain committed to empowering African youth and shaping the continent’s development trajectory. The Five/5 Campaign with African Monitor was a pivotal moment in our history, and we are excited to continue working together to create a brighter future for all.
Through the Five/5 Campaign, we organized national campaigns, dialogues, and mobilizations in 10 African countries, inspiring thousands of young people to take ownership of their future. The campaign’s success was evident in the thousands of young people who participated across the continent, demonstrating the power of youth-led initiatives and partnerships.
Our partnership with African Monitor was instrumental in building a strong network of youth leaders and organizations, which ultimately led to the formalization of Step Up Youth Initiative as a registered organization. We are proud to have been part of this journey and look forward to continued collaboration and impact.
